It all started a couple of months ago when we started praying before dinner with Grace. “Dear God, thank you for Mama, Dada, Grace, and Emma. Thank you for our food. Amen”. Then with a big smile on her face, Grace says “Amen!” We say this same simple prayer every evening. This week, Grace has developed a love for prayer. Throughout our day, Grace says “God… God… God” which is her prompt for Mommy to start praying.
We have prayed while grocery shopping. “Dear God, thank you that we can buy food to eat. Help those who are hungry. Amen”. As we walk up the steps to our apartment. “Dear God, thank you for your love. We love you. Amen”. As we take a walk to the park. “Dear God, thank you for the sunshine and warm weather. Thank you for the playground. Amen”. As we read a book. “Dear God, thank you for great books to read. Amen” And after every prayer, Grace says “Amen!”
I love how at only a year and a half, Grace has learned to pray. How she wants to pray throughout the entire day. Grace’s middle name is “Florence” after her African grandmother who also had a passion for prayer. Stephen grew up going to all night prayer meetings with his mom. It looks like Grace is following in her grandmother’s footsteps!
It’s also a great reminder for me to continually talk to God throughout my day. To know that nothing is too small or unimportant to pray about. The apostle Paul wrote, “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
What reminds you to pray? What has a child taught you about God?
