A Father's Delight - Rebekah Nyakairu

A Father’s Delight

God our Abba Father delights in us, His beloved sons and daughters. Did you catch that? God delights in you!

Some good friends of ours had their first baby recently and we were excited to visit them in the hospital. It was my first time holding a newborn who was less than twenty four hours old! We loved holding the little guy and meeting him for the first time. It was touching to see our friends take joy in their new roles as parents.

The next day I read this verse…

God brought me out into a spacious place; He rescued me because He delighted in me. Psalm 18:19

As I read the words “He delighted in me” all I could think of was the image of this new daddy looking at his baby boy. The look of utter delight on this dad’s face was priceless.

This little baby boy was less than a day old. He had done absolutely nothing to earn his father’s love. Yet the love this dad had for his baby boy was amazing. He delighted in his son simply because this boy belonged to him. It was his firstborn son.

In the same way, God delights in us. We can do nothing to earn or lose this utter delight.

Brennan Manning puts it best in his book, “Abba’s Child: The Cry of the Heart for Intimate Belonging”.

“While the impostor draws his identity from past achievements and the adulation of others, the true self claims identity in its belovedness. We encounter God in the ordinariness of life: not in the search for spiritual highs and extraordinary, mystical experiences but in our simple presence in life.”

Manning adds, “Quit keeping score altogether and surrender yourself with all your sinfulness to God who sees neither the score nor the scorekeeper but only his child redeemed by Christ.”

May we know the utter delight God has when He looks upon us! For this truth frees us from striving and condemnation. Our achievements do not earn His love and our past sins are forgiven. What glorious truths!

How does the image of Abba Father delighting in you change the way you view God?
